The Winter Stone One Legend Three Enchanting Novellas Legends of Scotland Book 1 edition by Tanya Anne Crosby Glynnis Campbell Laurin Wittig Romance eBooks
I must say that I was spellbound reading The Winter Stone: One Legend, Three Enchanting Novellas. Each one of the stories was very different from the other two, but all were written around the Scottish legend of the Winter Stone. Having read other books by Tanya Anne Crosby and Glynnis Campbell, I knew I would like the stories, and was curious as to how the three authors would use the legend in their respective tales. The first story (Tanya Anne Crosby), "Once Upon a Highland Legend," explains the legend and introduces the crone who bears the stone from one Keeper to the next. This story surprised me the most because the author used time travel for her modern heroine to go back to medieval Scotland. Her hero is a Pecht (Pict) - also surprising since it seems that Picts are scarce if not absent in this genre. I won't spoil it by giving away details of the story. For those who have read and liked her other books, you will not be disappointed. The heroine, Annie, has always been obsessed with the legend of the Stone of Destiny and wishes with all her heart that she could be the one to discover its true resting place. Add a little time travel, and enjoy the read!
The second story (Laurin Wittig), "MacAlister's Hope," was the one I was most excited to read because I've not read any of her books before. I definitely will do so now! I loved her characters and found myself (of course!) wishing for more of the story, which I understand are in her book "The Devil of Kilmartin." I'll be buying that one next! Her heroine, Fia, is a gifted healer (a lass after my own heart!) who is given the Stone to aid her in healing a very important clan chief. That is only the beginning, as Fia quickly learns what the Stone has to reveal to her.
The third story (Glynnis Campbell), "The Outcast," was for me the most satisfying of the three novellas. The hero and heroine are both outcasts in a sense, thrown together by circumstances when he hides her from those who are after her. He is a wounded soldier and she is persecuted for her scientific beliefs. He is charged with passing the Stone to one of her description, but she views the Stone as any other scientific challenge to be figured out and understood.
The common thread through all three novellas, of course, is the Winter Stone. It seems that the Stone supplies for its Keepers what is needed most for each respective time period, as well as each Keeper's personal quest. For Annie in medieval Scotland, truth versus deception could mean life or death. For Fia, the knowledge of a gifted healer sometimes isn't enough, and then only faith and perseverance can supply an answer. Finally, for Alisoune, whose answers are usually found in science, there are times when one can only trust and hope.
I really liked these three stories written around one legend. Of course I'd like to know more of these characters' stories, but that would be for the authors to decide (grin!!). I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who likes this genre.

The Winter Stone
Tanya Ann Crosby, Glynis Campbell, and Laurin Wittig
This book ties together three novellas, each a beautifully interwoven story that has as its common thread the Winter Stone,Biera its Guardian, and a (temporary) Keeper. For each story there is an improbable romance and amazing fantasy. For each story lives are changed and destinies claimed. Annie, Fia, and Alisoune are courageous, intelligent, talented, and loving women. Each takes on the role of Keeper of the Keek Stane (the Winter Stone) in a story. What follows is a paragraph about each story.
Novella 1 – Once Upon a Highland Legend (Tanya Ann Crosby)
Annie Ross, a scientist with a background in both Archeology and Linguistic Anthropology, travels to Kingussie, Scotland with one thing in mind finding the Stone of Destiny. She did not believe the conventional wisdom as to where the real stone was located. She believes the stone people think is the Winter Stone is actually a fake. Annie arrived in Scotland with the clothes on her back because the airline lost her bags. Annie visited a store with the idea of picking up items she needed for her stay beginning with a hike up the mountain peak known as Devil’s Point. In the store Annie meets Biera, the storekeeper, Biera is a strange, one-eyed crone who speaks in riddles. As the shopkeeper talked to Annie about her needs for her hike, Annie found herself gravitating toward a bowl that contained several balls, one of which was heavy, smooth and perfectly round. There were striations in the center and that appeared to change colors like a mood stone. Finally, the shopkeeper gifted the object to Annie. Annie sets off on her adventure after meeting with her sister Kate. Annie hikes toward the Devil’s Point but along the way becomes disoriented. She awakes to see” a half-naked man”. Her time traveling adventure has begun! Annie looks around at the land but cannot believe here eyes. During her travels she will come to know a people that no longer exists -- Picts (Pechs) including Callum, Brude, Angus, Morag, Dunneld, and Fergus, along the way. Questions to think about Is there a developing relationship between Callum and Annie? Who is Fergus? Is Fergus planning some devious and dangerous act that might harm the clan? Morag is a female elder whom Annie fears; should Annie be worried? Dunneld befriends Annie, what role does he play in the events that set back the clan?
Novella 2 – MacAllister’s Hope (Laurin Wittig)
The setting is Kilmartin Castle where Chief Symon MacLachlan, is its leader. He loves his wife Elena and three daughters dearly. Elena is very special because she is famous for her healing skills. Her 13-year-old daughter, Mairi, shows great promise as a healer and the daughter is being mentored by Fia Hay, who is an herbalist and healer. Fia is a very good healer but less known and sees herself as inferior when compared to Elena when it comes to healing. The story begins with a visit from the son of the chief of the MacAlisters. Tavish MacAlister is accompanied by a warrior and superb diplomat, Kieron MacAlister. Tavish demands that Elena accompany him to Kilglashan to heal his very ill father. There is a fly in the ointment, he realizes, when he sees her. Elena is pregnant and expects to deliver the baby in a matter of days. She cannot make such an arduous trip. The solution, disliked by Tavish, but clearly understood by Kieron, was to send Fia along to help the MacAlister Chief. Tavish is extremely unhappy about this turn of events and he has no faith in Fia. Fia gathers her herbs and other needed items. What she does not recall is that she has met the handsome diplomat Kieron seven years before and offered words of encouragement and wisdom that dramatically changed his outlook on life. I will not reveal the remainder of the plot other than to say that Kieron is the Keeper of the Winter Stone but Fia finds a very special use for it that enables Chief MacAlister to heal. What must the oldest daughter of Chief MacLachlan, Mairi, do to save the day? Although Fia returns home in time to assist Elena with her birth of twins, what problem occurs? After Kieron reminds Fia that they have met before and how she helped him, do they form a relationship? What major barriers stand in the way of their having a relationship? A young woman named Annis accompanies Fia as her assistant. What role does Annis play in the healing of the MacAlister chief?
Novella 3 – The Outcast (Glynis Campbell)
The lonely, bitter survivor, is Lachlan Mar, a former knight of a recent war. He comes back from the battle broken in body and spirit. Lachlan is convinced he is an utter failure because he could not save the lives of his four brothers, all of whom died in the bloody war. At the opening of the story he is a drunk loser lost in a stupor inside a dilapidated small cottage. Both he and the cottage are in disrepair – both are filthy and unkempt. He feels he has little to live for since a lass named Margaret left him without remorse. She found him wanting. While in a stupor the previous night there was a fierce, persistent knock at his door. There on his door step stood a crone, Biera, who impatiently asked him questions and finally thrust a crystal, the Keek Stane, into his hand then made him promise to give the Winter Stone to the "Keeper of the Stone". Of course, he is totally confused by all of this given his drunken state and no understanding of what she is talking about. His trusty deerhound Campbell is at Lachlan’s side after this scene unfolds. Little does he know that his life is about to dramatically change. On the next day a breathless, bespectacled lass burst into the cottage and hides under the covers of his bed! He is stunned speechless. She pleads with him to say he is alone when townspeople and Father Nimian, the local priest demands entrance. Finally, Lachlan and his big deerhound convince the group to leave without searching his cottage. The lass, Alisoune Hay, fills him in on what happened. She is a spectacles seller who loves to study science. She is a curious person who freely speaks her mind based upon the advances of great scientists such as Copernicus. The problem The ideas of scientists clash with beliefs of some church leaders who want to stick to the old ways and beliefs. Father Nimian and his flock had one thing in mind for her – a hanging for her blasphemous comments. Despite his misgivings, Lachlan allows Alisoune to hide out at his place until the wintry weather improves – now it is extremely cold and snowy. A bad storm is passing through the area. Her time in the cottages provides a temporary respite helps him see how inventive she is and caring she is. Alisoune begins to better understand his plight. She knows why he is holed up in a cottage some distance from the town of Kierfield. The plot goes further than I have in this review. You might wonder if Campbell and Lachlan embrace this intelligent, inventive, sensitive and talkative young woman. Does Father Nimian and the townsfolk give up on their attempt to do Alisoune harm? What role does the Winter Stone play? Alisoune's inventive mind enables her to convert pieces of armor, leather, a shield handle and other components into useful items that help Lachlan or Campbell perform useful tasks. Is it possible that an invention of hers enables Lachlan to save her from burning at the stake? In summary, I loved these three novellas. Each story is enjoyable and captivating yet different.
