Excerpt
For more than 30 years I have been caring for thousands of people with fibromyalgia. My interest in this condition came about during my training as a rheumatologist in the United States. I learned how to recognize the characteristics of the disease, but was unable to explain how a person could have such diverse symptoms as pain, fatigue, insomnia, and bowel discomfort, among many others. Clearly, these patients’ complaints were real, but it was also obvious that many of them were immersed in stressful situations. At the time, I conjectured that fibromyalgia could be due to a drastic breakdown of our stress-response system, known in medicine as the autonomic nervous system. Sadly, there was no objective and reliable method to study how said stress-response component worked.
Many physicians do not have a coherent theoretical framework to define fibromyalgia. A linear and reductionist (these terms are explained in coming chapters) medical paradigm, though still current, is not capable of understanding the complexity of fibromyalgia. Thus, this lack of understanding naturally leads to ill-treatment of these patients.
For more than three decades now, I have had the privilege of working at the National Institute of Cardiology in Mexico, a center committed to the development of new medical knowledge. High-end cardio technology (namely computerized heart rate variability analysis) was applied to the study of fibromyalgia. We observed that indeed, the stress-response system in patients with fibromyalgia is damaged. Sophisticated computer studies of heartbeats variability opened the fascinating field of complexity sciences to us, and we were thus provided with a holistic view of fibromyalgia and its treatment. More recently, we outlined the mechanisms through which alterations in our stress response system can generate true chronic pain, and the other symptoms of fibromyalgia.
This book explains what fibromyalgia is, why it is so frequent these days, the kinds of discomfort it causes, how it can be diagnosed, and current treatment. The intricate mechanisms that trigger and sustain the disease are also discussed. All of these topics are presented in laymen terms for patients and their families, bereft of technical terms and medical jargon.
The discussion on the mechanisms that trigger fibromyalgia is somewhat biased in that it emphasizes the research work carried out by our institution. This should be considered the natural reaction of a researcher who is fascinated by, and obsessed with, his discoveries. Note nevertheless, that as we shall see ahead, the conclusions drawn from scientific investigations are necessarily impartial, and that our initial results have already been corroborated by researchers elsewhere. It is also important to highlight that our findings in no way conflict with the host of new evidence being generated in different parts of the world. Quite the contrary, both appear to cohere and contribute to a holistic explanation of the disease.
This book is not only addressed to patients with fibromyalgia and their families, but also to health care professionals. Although worded simply, the discussions strive to be in-depth, up-to-date and detailed. Statements are based on scientific studies. Included at the end of this book are bibliographic references to the original scientific sources for those health care professionals interested in the disease.

A little more information than the average fibro book. I just wish the doctor had entered more about his treatments. I'm still contacting him. Good to know there are people out there still researching. It was all spot on.
It is well written, easily understood and a reasonable explanation of the condition. I would recommend this to all FM sufferers.
