Life after the wasting disease left cities empty and real food non-existent. A nutritional supplement called PDQ took the place of eating. It also had a stimulant effect which the druggies learned to extract. A medicinal effect was also contained in the PDQ but few knew how to derive it.Jess lives by herself and has a good friend, Ian. He has a younger sister, Lucie, for his responsibility. Trader's Den is similar to a flea market but one must be careful there. Molly is a blind friend that Jess trades with - both for information and food items. As suspected, gangs are everywhere and also have spies out. The upside is that there is talk of a place called the Promised Land.
Jess, Ian, Lucie and Molly decide to go to that Land - if they can find it. First, the travelers must cross through a huge cemetery. And, this is when the plot thickens, for sure. How about a proposal in a mortuary for that extra something special?
I like the characters and their trials and tribulations. Jess has a difficult time but I can tell she is a survivor. Toss in some romance, add Molly for her knowledge of life and sense of humor and this story is off and running.
Highly recommended.. Am sure there must be another part of this one coming!!

Wow! I loved this book! I can't wait for the next book to see where the story goes from here.
Broken Earth was an ok read for me. The premise was short and sweet, and the book pretty much delivers on showing just how Jess and the other survivors...well survived. The gangs were a lot like one nowadays, only filled with only children, as is the rest of society (since the adults all died from various plagues and illnesses. A world run and inhabited by nothing but youths...sounds enticing to be honest.
It was a pretty interesting book; the premise was one that I had often wondered about. Kids (well, teenagers) in charge of basically everything. I finished it in about two hours, and it was an easy read. Ryder didn't try and overload the book with words that sound like they were picked randomly from a thesaurus, which I appreciated immensely. It was a simple, fun read from a promising author.
How scary would it be to watch so many people, including your family, die from horrible sickness. Trying to stay alive and safe from the gangs and horrible crimes!
I was unsure if I wanted to read Broken Earth, some of the subject matter, depending on how it was written was potentially disturbing, but it was written very well. I enjoyed that this wasn't some fluffy story following the current trend. It takes what is a real problem today(our dependence on the earth's natural resources) and extrapolates it into one possible outcome. One where children are scared for their lives and responsible for themselves and their younger siblings. Jess and Ian are doing their best to do just that. Only with gangs running rampant and violence surrounding them it isn't as easy as it sounds. They decide the only way to be free to is to travel to the promised land...if it's real. I won't give spoilers, but I will eagerly await a sequel.
A dark and gritty world remains after what had gone before. Broken Earth by Lee Ryder imagines a terrible future that echoes from where we appear to be heading today. Break out your hidden stash of PDQ and enjoy this well told tale that you won’t easily forget. Looking forward to the next one by this author. Highly recommended. Five stars.
This was a good young adult novel, but I would recommend for mature readers- although not graphic, there is reference to rape, sex, death/murder, and pregnancy. A plague/illness wipes out most (all?) adults leaving behind children, teens and a few people in their early twenties. The plot is a bit thin in places, and there is not a lot of character development beyond brief descriptions - this story is pure action and plot driven. There were some issues with the editing and redundant word usage, but I was caught up in the storyline and managed to ignore these minor errors for the most part. Great job of world-building, which is what brought this book out of the 3-star category.
Broken Earth is an entirely new world than what we know. Present day life is over and a new life style has begun. Disease takes over and there is only one thing left for Jess to do... survive. She does everything in her power to stay alive while gangs run rapid throughout the area and the disease has killed everyone older then 25 years old. The violence is creeping around each corner.
Jess isn't alone though. She has her best friend Ian and his younger sister, Lucie. As they are traveling to the promised land, they run into Molly. Each of them use their survival skills to stay alive during their trials.
Jess is faced with a brutal rape and what lies within her future has me wanting more. This book is one that I couldn't put down. Once I started reading it, I had to finish it. I loved the suspense and the characters. I would say that Jess would be my favorite so far. I think if you're looking for a fast paced, yet interesting read, this would be your pick.
I can't wait until the next one and I highly recommend this as a read.
