This manga was clearly inspired by the witch trials, a time when if you were ever suspected a witch for the littlest things, then you have forever been targeted as such. No matter how they torture you, whether they get you to confess or not, you're still a witch in the end and there's never any proof otherwise, so you die. I can only imagine what fear the people must've lived through during this unfair time period, being ruled over by dangerous clergy of blind faith; it actually irritates me thinking about it.

For those who want a story providing a welcoming relief to it, this is it. We have a man named Mist, otherwise known as the Black Knight (literally in one aspect) who travels about to protect the innocent that were condemned as witches and challenges beliefs in faith. To me he really stands out as a very likeable and unique hero character, and not just because he's the only black character in this fantasy/adventure series. What's more, his skin color actually plays a significant part to who and how he is in the story, without any racism attached to it (except for the evil clergy who believe his skin color 'proves' he's a demon).

The only thing about it that made me roll my eyes was Euphemia, a supporting heroine so rediculously scantily clad she may as well be wearing nothing, although it's kind of a running joke. So other than this one example of a semi-misogynistic female character design, it also has its very likeable female characters, including Nina, the girl that Mist saves at the start, and a very tough (not so likeable here) villainess. A very fun read and I look forward to the next volume.

Trivia here: this was created by the guy who did the Burst Angel manga, for anyone who cares.
